Glutathione (reduced form, GSH) is a tripeptide of glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine. The glutamate is joined through its γ-carboxyl group rather than a standard peptide bond. Its free cysteine thiol makes it a standard reagent in redox chemistry.
In laboratory settings, reduced glutathione is used as a substrate and reference standard in glutathione S-transferase (GST) and glutathione peroxidase enzyme assays. It is also used in GSH/GSSG ratio measurements and thiol-disulfide exchange studies in cell-based and cell-free systems.
